Speed is believed to have killed a motorcyclist who crashed through a fence and hit a tree at Wellsford, north of Auckland, last night.
Police said the man, in his 40s, died when he lost control of his large motorcycle on a moderate north-bound bend north of Wellsford.
Sergeant Mike Cook said a reconstruction of the incident indicated that after leaving the road, the motorcycle hit a tree.
"He has carried on for a further 20-30 metres and then gone through a fence ... so you can get an idea of how fast he was going."
Mr Cook said even at 100km/h on a motorcycle, the bend was not difficult to negotiate.
The man, who was wearing a safety helmet, was found dead at the scene.
His name and details would not be released until relatives, possibly overseas, had been told, Mr Cook said.
