A person has been killed and two others injured in a two-vehicle crash on State Highway 2, in Waitakaruru, today.

Police, fire crews and St John were called to the crash at 11.03am after two cars collided at the notorious danger spot.

The accident happened on the intersection of SH2, Steen Rd and Okaeria Rd.

A St John spokeswoman confirmed one person had died and two patients were in a serious condition. Paramedics were still at the scene just after midday and a rescue helicopter had arrived.

St John later said of those injured that one had received critical injuries while the other had sustained minor injuries.

The Auckland Westpac Rescue Helicopter said its crew helped a woman in her 40s who had suffered chest injuries as a result of a car versus ute T-bone collision.

A spokesman said: "Crew needed to perform a rapid sequence intubation on her to assist her breathing.

"She was flown to Auckland City Hospital in a critical condition.''

Diversions were put in place at the time and police urged motorists in the area to drive with care or to delay travel times.

The road was reopened at 4.15pm and drivers were told to be patient, as congestion in the area eased.
