A 57-year-old man was taken into custody after an hour-long armed offender call-out in Central Hawke's Bay.
The arrest was confirmed by Inspector Dean Clifford, of the police Eastern District command centre in Napier.
The Armed Offenders' Squad and Police Negotiating Team were called out about 1pm. Cordons were put in place in the area of State Highway 2 between Waipukurau
and Takapau.
Police were told told of a suspected armed incident near Takapau, in which a man was alleged to have brandished a small gun and threatened a woman.
He is understood to have then left the area and driven on State Highway 2 towards Waipukurau. The vehicle was abandoned near the Waipukurau Golf Course at the northern end of the Takapau Plains.
Police were called-in from throughout Central Hawke's Bay and from as far north as Napier and the man was believed to have surrendered to police in a paddock off Ashcott Rd, west of the Ashcott Bridge.
A woman living in the area had left her State Highway 2 home as a precaution after being told of the situation.
Police are now speaking to the man and continuing their investigation.
