A magnitude 5 earthquake jolted the Hawkes Bay area tonight.
The 5.0 quake at 8.36pm was felt widely in Southern Hawkes Bay, according to GNS Science.
It was centred approximately 120km east of Masterton and 60km east of Porangahau on the east coast, at a depth of 12km.
It followed a 4.4 magnitude quake in the same area at 4.06am today, centred 60km southeast of Porangahau at a depth of 20km.
