Motorists south on State Highway 2 near Gisborne are being asked to drive cautiously after a diesel spill.
The spill was covering the length of road between Maraetaha Road and the Wharerata Lookout, central police communications Inspector Ken Climo said.
The track of the spill ranged from just over 300mm wide down to a few drops and could be coming from a heavy motor vehicle that had developed a split in a fuel tank.
Roading contractors were on their way to clean up the spill but it could take some time due to the volume of fuel involved, Mr Climo said.
