Two missing 23 year-old women were found in the Rimutaka forest last night by a police search team.
Inspector Paul Jermy said the two trampers had set out for a day walk.
"They were not carrying any wet weather gear or torches and lacked sufficient experience for the walk," Mr Jermy said.
He said one of the women sent a text message to a family member to say they were lost.
The police search and rescue team were called in and walked the pair out at about 11pm.
