A woman was left with only the clothes she was wearing after a fire destroyed her Northland home yesterday.
Firefighters were called to the two-bedroom house on Wharau Rd, 10km east of Kerikeri, about 11am.
Dave Clark, deputy chief fire officer for the Kerikeri Volunteer Fire Brigade, said the house was ablaze by the time officers arrived and there was little they could do to save the property.
Mr Clark said the woman was at a neighbour's house for coffee and returned to see her house on fire.
No one else was in the house at the time. Firefighters took four hours to douse the fire with water transported from a stream 5km away.
Mr Clark said investigations were being carried out.
