KEY POINTS:
Donations are down, but the demand for help from Auckland City Mission is rising.
The charity is asking for donations of food, money and presents for its annual Christmas appeal.
Auckland City Missioner Diane Robertson says it is proving to be a tough year, with donations running at about 20 per cent below normal. She says there are a large number of families who need help to put food on the table, so basics such as baked beans, flour and sugar are useful.
People can drop off donations at the mission, or donations can be picked up from homes.
