Peru issues Fujimori arrest order

Peru yesterday issued an international arrest order on charges of human rights abuses for ousted President Alberto Fujimori, who is in self-imposed exile in Japan.

"Today we have issued arrest orders for his capture at the international and national levels," Supreme Court judge Jose Luis Lecaros said.

Peru's Congress and Attorney-General have charged Fujimori with responsibility for two notorious massacres that occurred during his hardline 1990-2000 rule. He fled to Japan in November 2000 during a corruption scandal triggered by his now-jailed former spy chief Vladimiro Montesinos.
