"There was an idea to bring together a group of remarkable people, to see if we could become something more, so when they needed us, we could fight the battles that they never could."

So begins the spine-tingling first trailer for Avengers: Infinity War released by Disney's Marvel Studios today, which also managed to somehow cram that same group into a two-minute clip, The Daily Mail reports.

The clip sees superheroes from across the entire marvel Cinematic Universe, a decade in the making, coming together for the first time to face an unprecedented threat, in Josh Brolin's Thanos.

The opening line is uttered unseen by the team, Doctor Strange's (Benedict Cumberbatch) first meeting with The Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) is seen, the latter in Bruce Banner form, lying in a crater of his own making.

Meanwhile Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) and Vision (Paul Betanny) appear to be living the life of a normal-looking married couple, apart from the yellow Mind Stone embedded in the latter's forehead.

Scarlett Johannson's Black Widow finishes the line, sporting a new blonde bob.

As Robert Downey's Tony Stark is seen joining Strange, Banner and Wong (Benedict Wong), an ominous voiceover is heard.

"In time you know what it's like to lose," Brolin's voice growls. "You feel so desperately that you're right. Yet to fail all the same. Dread it. Run from it. Destiny still arrives."

A gargantuan portal gate then appears hovering over New York, activating Peter Parker's (Tom Holland) spidey-sense, before he slips into his new mechanized suit to climb on for a closer look.

Fans the get their best ever look at the intergalactic villain, as he steps through a portal into a wasteland, with the slightest smirk at the destruction before him.

Thanos's goal is to assemble the six Infinity Stones, super-powerful MacGuffins that have served as individual plot drivers for a decade of Marvel films to date.

The baddie wants the decorate his gauntlet with them — and by the looks of the trailer he already has two: the blue Space Stone, and the purple Power Stone.

After Loki's (Tom Hiddleston) antics in the first Thor film the Tesseract/Space Stone had been kept at Asgard for safe-keeping; and it looks like the same guy might be helping Thanos out as he is seen offering it up.

Black Panther's (Chadwick Boseman) can then be heard ordering: "Evacuate the city, engage all defences... and get this man a shield."

He's referring to Chris Evans' Captain America, who has grown a beard while on the run since the events of Civil War.

"Fun isn't something one considers when balancing the universe," Thanos then sneers. "But this does put a smile on my face."

He may obtain a third stone by the end of the film too, as Loki's staff appears to pry the Mind Stone out of Vision's head.

The Avengers, including Anthony Mackie's Falcon, Stark in his Hulkbuster armour, and the reanimated Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan) then prepare for an epic battle against a horde of aliens in T'Challa's home of Wakanda.

The final shot sees Chris Hemsworth's Thor — apparently missing an eye, sounding disoriented aboard a spaceship.

"Who the hell are you guys?" he asks, as the camera reveals Chris Pratt's Starlord and the rest of the Guardians Of The Galaxy.

Avengers: Infinity War hits theaters on May 4, 2018.
