Europe is the perfect place for a bike ride. Jane Jurgens picks the best of the continent's fabulous trails.
1 The Danube
The Austrian Danube is one of the most famous cycle routes in Europe, with most cyclists starting in or near Passau and ending in Vienna. It's a leisurely cruise along the river, with plenty of sights to take in along the way. It's recommended you travel downstream, so you're not looking out for oncoming cyclists as much. Those who want to take the ride even futher can keeping going to Bratislava in Slovakia, or extend it at the beginning by starting in the medieval German town of Regensburg.
2 Scottish Canals
Cycling from Glasgow to Edinburgh along the Forth and Clyde canals and the Union Canal is another largely flatroute that's perfect for seeing the best of the beautiful countryside of central Scotland. Start at the Bowling Basin and make your way through Clydebank, Kirkintilloch, Falkirk and Linlithgow, before finishing in the centre of Edinburgh. Keep an eye out for the iconic Falkirk Wheel, as well as the many nature reserves, rivers and aqueducts. There are also numerous train stations along the way, if you don't feel like riding back afterwards.
3 Amsterdam
Take a tip from the locals and get yourself a set of wheels for an active tour around Amsterdam - wellknown for its flatness, you won't overexert yourself while peeping at the tulips.
There are four recreational bike routes in the Amsterdam harbour district, with a unique combination of industry, flora and fauna. Or opt for a tour with a local guide - there are plenty of experiences on offer catered to different tastes, be it nature, food or history.
4 Provence
It doesn't get more French than cycling through the lavender fields of the beautiful Provencal countryside. Visit in spring when everything's in bloom - you won't be disappointed. There are several gentle circuits in this area, some of which can even include a bit of wine tasting, once you're out in the vineyards. Be sure to visit the cultural city of Avignon and take in the spectacular scenery of Luberon.
