KEY POINTS:
Three brothers from Feilding have toppled bootylicious diva Beyonce from the top of Australia's singles chart, becoming the first New Zealand artists to claim the number one spot in more than a decade.
Alt rockers Evermore claimed the top spot this week with their single Light Surrounding You from the album Real Life.
The track had been climbing the Australian charts for 14 weeks, before finally knocking Beyonce's hit Irreplaceable from number one.
OMC was the last New Zealand artist to top the ARIA chart, with their one-hit-wonder How Bizarre in 1996.
Despite the boys undeniable New Zealand heritage - both Dann and Peter were born in New Zealand and all three brothers grew up in rural Feilding, near Palmerston North, where they were home schooled by their artist parents - the ARIA charts have the group marked as an Australian act.
The band's sophomore album Real Life currently sits at 11th place on the ARIA album chart, with record sales of more than 70,000.
In New Zealand, the single is static at number 23 on the RIANZ singles chart, and the album has dropped out of the top 40 after peaking at number 34 on the album charts, three weeks ago.
The boys' appeal has always been stronger in Australia, where their debut album Dreams sold more than 75,000 copies, scored them five ARIA award nominations and won an MTV Award in 2005. In New Zealand, sales failed to top more than 8,000 copies.
The unexpected success of the debut album garnered attention from across the globe, and in 2005, the band were signed to US label Sire Records, by Seymour Stein, the man responsible for launching the careers of music legends Madonna and the Ramones.
In an interview with the Herald last year, the band remained philosophical about their limited success at home.
When asked about the trend, frontman Jon shrugged and said: "Different countries have different tastes."
The band are currently touring Australia with the Big Day Out festival, after playing in Auckland last Friday.
