New projects and increased demand will underpin a recruitment drive this year in Auckland's information technology sector, says Absolute IT director Grant Burley.
Software developers are the most sought-after staff in the IT profession in Auckland, according to Absolute IT's latest Tech Employer Insight Survey.
The survey found the most sought-after skills this year included software development, business analysis, project management and data or database use, topping the previous highly demanded network and infrastructure roles.
"Seventy-five per cent of Auckland IT employers are planning to recruit additional staff or contractors in the coming year, with the majority of the hiring taking place to support new projects and increased customer demand," Burley said.
Auckland accounted for about 55 per cent of the IT sector's GDP and has more than 6700 companies employing just under 31,000 staff.
Burley said that although Wellington was recently labelled the high-tech capital of New Zealand, Auckland was a close rival.
According to Absolute IT, the median salary for IT workers in Auckland was $82,000 with an added median bonus of $6000, boosted by additional employment benefits.
