Apart from Mrs Feng, New Zealand badminton names Phil Horne, Richard Purse and Kieran Harrison will compete as well as a number of overseas players.
Cliff Freeman, Auckland Badminton development manager, says the sport needs promotional support to raise its profile.
"It is often perceived as a backyard sport that is slow whereas nothing is further from the truth. Badminton is the fastest racket sport in the world - the record smash being well over 400km/h. Our players need to be very fit and fast to play the game," he says.
Auckland Badminton is also trialling a new mixed-aged badminton format for Masters. "You can play, for example, in an 80s age group if you have a 35 and 45-year-old combined or two 40-year-olds," he explains.
Mrs Feng, who established a badminton academy in Ti Rakau, says the sport in Auckland is "not bad but could be better".
She says takes it takes time to develop players. She started playing at 11 for the Chinese national squad and later under the New Zealand banner.
She adds the sport is expensive and players need financial support. "There are coaching expenses, rackets and shuttlecocks to buy," says Mrs Feng.
But it's a vicious cycle."If you don't perform, they [sponsors] don't give you the money. But if they don't give you the money, you cannot develop and perform well," she says.
Mr Freeman says the association is working on raising funds by building a bigger base to enable it to support the top-level players. He says they also hope to attract more sponsors.
Mr Freeman says they have about 40,000 casual players and a foot traffic of 90,000 through their halls every year.
Top players in Auckland include Alan Chan, Michelle Chan and Henry Tam.
"The growing Asian population will ensure it continues to grow in popularity," he adds. "Although we are finding that it is appealing more and more to a range of cultures and groups in the community."
Mrs Feng is looking forward to the competition. "I'm a bit too old now," she says with a grin, " but I think it's going to be a lot of fun."
