Vanessa McGowan and Cy Winstanley hope audiences enjoy their on-stage chemistry as much as they do themselves, reports Sharu Delilkan.
When Vanessa McGowan, vocalist and double bassist for Her Make Believe Band, returned from Britain last year she knew it was vital the band tour the country to promote their new album, AM Radio.
But instead of bringing the entire four-piece, McGowan and her Kiwi boyfriend, lead singer Cy Winstanley, are touring as a duo.
"Typically, in London, you perform as a band," says Winstanley. "It's really nice being able to play our music as a duo which allows a calm acoustic interplay."
Although there will be half the number of people on stage here, the pair is confident HMBB's sound won't be compromised.
"In fact, the energy is bigger because you only have each other to rely on. I'm really enjoying preparing for these gigs because we have more latitude to try new things on stage."
Although AM Radio was released in the UK last year, the duo's tour coincides with its local release.
Uncut Magazine UK termed Winstanley a "a potent songwriter with a voice gently reminiscent of Paul Simon", at the same time complimenting McGowan's "beguiling harmonies".
Formerly from the North Shore, the pair is excited about the 15-date tour. "Having grown up on the North Shore we're both really looking forward to travelling throughout New Zealand," says McGowan, pointing out that being a couple has its benefits when performing as a duo.
"People respond very well to us playing together because they can recognise the energy and chemistry between us."
Adds Winstanley: "We live together and know each other so well, which gives us the edge when on stage."
Her Make Believe Band's Acoustic Duo tour begins at the Wine Cellar, St Kevins Arcade, 183 K Rd, Newton, Mar 25, 8.30pm. Door sales. More details, see www.hermakebelieveband.com
