WELLINGTON - The achievement of New Zealand children in maths and science has improved little since an international study six years ago, says a Ministry of Education report.
Preliminary results show children at about standard three and form three level are performing about the same as in the last study in 1994.
Comparisons of the 38 countries involved will not be available until December, but in 1994 New Zealand children were average in maths and science, with primary-age children low in maths.
Education Minister Trevor Mallard said yesterday that he was alarmed at the "largely stagnant" achievement, and he was concerned that the gap between Maori and Pacific Island children and European children had widened since 1994.
