PHOENIX: A sheriff's deputy was shot and wounded yesterday after encountering suspected illegal immigrants who apparently had been hauling bales of marijuana along a smuggling corridor in the Arizona desert.
Law enforcement agencies deployed helicopters and officers to hunt for suspects after the deputy was shot with an AK-47.
The shooting is likely to add fuel to a debate sparked last week by an Arizona law cracking down on illegal immigration.
