One person has been taken to hospital after a six-car pileup in Central Otago.
Police say the crash happened in the Roaring Meg section of the Kawarau Gorge about 7.15am.
Firefighters cut one driver from a car.
Police said a heavy motor vehicle had come to the end of a slow-vehicle bay and a van had stopped suddenly to let it out.
The van and truck continued on but six following vehicles collided in nose-to-tails.
The injured man was in the last of those six vehicles, a ute, and was taken to Dunstan Hospital with suspected neck injuries. His condition was thought to be moderate to serious.
Others involved have received minor bumps and bruises.
The road was down to one lane for a time and four vehicles were towed from the scene.
Police said the road conditions were good with no ice on the road and it seemed following too closely was a factor in the crash. It was a reminder for drivers to remember the two-second following distance rule, police said.
Queenstown Lakes District Council is warning motorists about patches of ice across the region's roads and the danger of black ice at daybreak.
The council said the roads had all been well gritted but advised drivers to keep speeds down and drive to the conditions.
