Hundreds of people have reported feeling an earthquake that struck south of Wanaka.
A 4.4 magnitude quake hit 5km deep, 25km south of the popular tourist town at 11:21 this morning.
"Shaken, but not stirred," is how one local described the experience.
Geonet had earlier classified it as a strong quake but has since downgraded it to a light quake, though a number of people who reported feeling it on the site described it as strong or extreme.
