Exactly what caused a huge bush fire in Northland is still being investigated.
Several fire crews and two helicopters were needed when a blaze broke out on Marlin Drive, in Taupo Bay, shortly before 7pm yesterday.
A spokesman for the Fire Service said this morning the fire was brought under control a few hours later and crews left the site about 10pm.
However, the cause has still not been established, he said.
A police spokeswoman said fire investigators were still working to determine the circumstances of the blaze and would be passing on information to them when those details were known.
The fire was 70m by 7m and climbing up steep terrain.
Members of the public - including some at a nearby campground - captured images and video footage of helicopters working to put it out last night.
