A man drowned after he and his son were tipped from a boat this afternoon at the Kapiti Coast.
Both washed up on shore near Otaki Beach but the 60-year-old died despite attempts to revive him by local Surf Rescue and members of the public.
His son, aged 22, was wearing a life jacket and made it to safety.
St John Ambulance medics arrived at the scene at about 4.45pm.
"Two people had been thrown from a small boat approximately 100 metres from shore between Otaki and Waikawa Beaches," a police spokesman said. "Family have been advised and are in the process of notifying extended family members."
Anyone with any information or who may have seen the boat prior to the incident is urged to contact Constable Juan Agnew of the Otaki Police.
