A man has been charged with unlawful possession of a firearm after a member of the public reported seeing someone waving what was described as a .22 rifle out of a car window.

Western Bay of Plenty acting Senior Sergeant Tristan Murray said a member of the public saw someone brandishing the rifle out the front passenger window of a car travelling on State Highway 2 near Papamoa, about 8.35pm last night.

The callout attracted an armed police response and the vehicle was stopped on Te Awanui Drive. One man has been charged with unlawful possession of a firearm and another was arrested on an outstanding warrant.
