A man who crashed his vehicle while being pursued by police allegedly had a bag containing drugs and a gun.

A car was spotted travelling north at high speed on State Highway 1, near Bombay, south Auckland, at about 3.15pm today, police said in a statement.

"The driver failed to stop and was pursued for about two minutes before crashing into the motorway median barrier at Ramarama.''

After he crashed, the man ran away from the car and was chased by officers.

"As he ran away he was seen to drop a backpack which was later found to contain quantity of drugs and a loaded semi-automatic pistol,'' police said.

Police patrols, dog units and the police helicopter searched an area around Quarry Road for about 30 minutes and a man was located and arrested.

He was being interviewed by Counties Manukau police.
