A Wellington school is closed today after a fire ripped through its administration block early this morning.
A fire service spokeswoman said four fire trucks were called to the blaze at Paparangi School about 2.50am.
One truck remained at the scene and fire safety are investigating.
Police said the administration block has been badly damaged as a result of the fire.
The cause of the blaze is not yet known.
Paparangi School Principal Susan Blyther said the school will be closed for the day, and requested any parents who are able to keep their children at home today to do so.
The school has no electricity or administrative facilities but will have some staff available to supervise children who are not able to stay home.
Anyone with information about the fire or who may have been in the area at the time to contact them on 04 381 2000.
