Gisborne boy Lucas Ward died from drowning, according to a preliminary pathologist's report.
The four-year-old's body was found in the Waimata River on Thursday, nine days after he went missing from his grandmother's house on the banks of the river.
A preliminary report showed he died from drowning, NewstalkZB reported.
However, Gisborne police have refused to comment until tomorrow.
