A 16-year-old girl is in hospital with serious injuries after apparently crashing in Auckland and Waikato on Saturday.
She hit a tree at Taupiri, 26km northwest of Hamilton, about 6.45pm after an earlier crash in Auckland and reports of a car being driven erratically near Huntly, 8km from Taupiri.
Inspector Leo Tooman of Waikato police said the episode began when a young woman appeared to have crashed into a fence at a Burger King in Dominion Rd, Auckland.
Some time later the erratically driven Volkswagen Golf was noticed near Huntly and briefly pursued.
It was later found to have missed a bend at the bridge near Taupiri and crashed through barriers and into a tree. The driver was in a serious condition in Waikato Hospital last night.
