Landcare Research is dubbing Auckland the weediest city in the world and is urging people to take action.
There are nearly 20,000 exotic plant species in Auckland and more than 200 of them are noxious weeds.
Dr Margaret Stanley says the weather in Auckland is ideal for exotic weeds, especially the most noxious, and landowners have to make an effort to get rid of them.
She says Auckland Regional Council has proposed a ban on the sale of a number of palms because they grow too readily from seed.
