Wellington was the only region to post a rise in economic activity in March quarter results of the National Bank's regional trends survey.
Bay of Plenty recorded the largest decline, shrinking 3.7 per cent in the first three months of the year.
The South Island economy slumped 2.3 per cent in the quarter and the North Island contracted 0.9 per cent. The nationwide decline in activity in the quarter was 1.2 per cent.
