Lakes and Waterways Action Group will receive an update from Taupō District Council on their Flood Hazard plan change at their April 20 meeting.

The plan change is due to be notified later this year. Planning for natural hazards is one of Taupō District Council's core responsibilities under the Resource Management Act 1991.

Given it has many waterways, future flooding is a very real possibility.

They commissioned Opus Consultants to update their flood hazard information in the District Plan based on computer modelling of flooding in a 1 per cent Annual Exceedance Probability (AEP) event, otherwise known as a one-in-100 year flood.

Maps showing the low, medium or high risk areas will be included in the flood hazard plan change along with new objectives, policies and rules. The council consulted with affected landowners about this plan change over the past year.

Policy manager Nick Carroll and senior policy advisor Sue Mavor will outline the proposed plan change.

"Landowners are encouraged to visit taupo.govt.nz to see the revised flood hazard areas and find out more about the plan change," Nick said.

All are welcome to attend the Lakes and Waterways meeting at 5.15pm on Thursday April 20 in the Matai Room at Waiora House, Spa Rd.
