The 19th annual Hunterville Huntaway Festival was held in the Rangitikei township of Hunterville on Saturday.

Thousands turned out to watch the crazy events, which included the trademark Shepherds' Shemozzle.

A record-breaking 100 shepherds raced with their huntaway dogs for the coveted top prize, negotiating a course that tested strength, endurance, patience and the pair's bond.

One challenge also involved the shepherds holding a bull's testicle between their teeth.

The event as a whole showcases rural life in New Zealand and brings the essence of community spirit into being as volunteers pull the day of entertainment together.
