In the strongest Dannevirke sale of the season prices for weaner bulls averaged $544.

A total of 744 weaners were sold with the top price for weaner Friesians going for ten penned by DR and LD Last at $590.

There were huge numbers of beef crosses in the sale, the top going for $622 from the Diamond Family Trust.

A very nice line of autumn-born bulls from Swansson Farms sold for $705.

McHardy Bros received top price for weaner white-faced heifers at $570.

Friesian weaner bulls were selling in excess of $540.

Auctioneer Bjorn Andersen said there was a "very good buyer's bench which had come to buy - not just to look".

They stretched from Wairarapa to Wairoa with the beef crosses going predominantly to Eketahuna and Hawke's Bay.

PGG Wrightson Livestock representative said in the last three sales at Dannevirke over 2100 weaner bulls have been sold and the season is not finished with a good yarding of over 500 expected for the January 10 sale featuring more and more top beef cross weaners.

He said farmers must be encouraged because Dannevirke prices are on a par with Feilding sales.
