Fashioning a scarecrow for the Marton Harvest Fair scarecrow competition has always been a must for many local residents.
Fair co-ordinator Cath Ash said the fair this Sunday, March 25, starting at 10am in Marton Park, Follet St, will once again become the loved annual event of town.
Already, a week before, a few scarecrows have popped up around town, she said.
"What people come up with is fantastic.The ideas are always so original and quirky.''
But the popular fair doesn't come without huge commitment from dozens of volunteers - and now seven years later it hasn't faltered, she said.
"It's gone from strength to strength. It's a fun day with events to appeal to everyone."
Events include the best-decorated pumpkin competition and the popular amateur beer brewing contest, along with the wood chopping, another rugged rural event.
Stone the Crows
Celebrity Chef Jax Hamilton - described as a cook full of fun, inspiration and personality - will be at the fair too. And anything goes where food is concerned, Jax always says.
There is also an evening with Jax on Saturday night, March 24, at Rangitikei College, Ms Ash said. "It is a wonderful event and people will love her."
Jax has described her recipes as totally accessible, delicious and full of personality, "using your own pantry, homegrown tucker, the local shop, farmers market or - my absolute favourite - foraged from the streets and parks in my 'hood".
Ms Ash said the fair was all about celebrating the harvest season in true country fashion, with more than 160 quality stalls offering food, music and fun.
"It's a day to bring the family, join your friends and neighbours and celebrate Marton's history and harvest."
Stalls will include everything from pickles and jams to paintings, pots, garden ornaments, jewellery, food and pot plants.
Stall holders come from as far away as Dunedin and Auckland, she said.
"There's the amazing goose-herding display again, which is always incredible entertainment," she said.
"It's a show unlike any other."
Ms Ash said there are loads of competitions to enter.
"Get involved in any of them that take your fancy. Try your hand at them all. And don't forget to collect a map of the scarecrow trail around town. Collect your map from the Project Marton site on the day.''
