Making local news 50 years ago this week in The Chronicle was the Horowhenua AP&I Show, touted as one of the best with the rodeo event a real crowd-pleaser.

Even a heavy rainfall that sent the crowds packing into the Industrial Hall and taking shelter wherever they could didn't discourage show-goers.

Show president Mr B Stewart said the Saturday night show was "beyond expectations" and gate takings were up 32 per cent from last year.

This time Whoops' bid for freedom ended after 10 days when children in a neighbouring section found him and returned him to his owner.

Pre-school children in Levin were missing out on pre-school education because the town's one kindergarten couldn't cope with numbers wanting to attend.

There were 300 children on the waiting list for the Levin Free Kindergarten.
