Quest begins anew for supersize spuds

Te Puke Citizens RSA club is again running its annual potato growing competition.

Club president Gus Cantlon says "We want as many Te Puke people to join in the fun as possible.

"The potatoes and buckets can be picked up from the club from next Monday and carefully tended until we have the official count and weigh-in on December 18 when we will have a barbecue, band and prizegiving," said Mr Cantlon.

Prizes are given for the biggest potato, the best yield and the greatest number of potatoes.

All entries must be grown in a bucket and bought to the weigh-in in that bucket.

"This is the third year that we have run this competition and have decided to make it a community event because of its popularity," said Mr Cantlon.

So trot along to the club, grab some seed potatoes and pop them in a bucket. Look after them until December 18 and reap a reward if your efforts are the best in a category.

Last year's winner was Dennise Hall, who was awarded a handsome trophy.
