Prices rise above expectations

A sheep auction.

It was a strong sale for all classes of stock at yesterday's store sale at Stortford Lodge.

The cattle sale was also a cow fair and 287 head of in-calf cows sold above schedule prices to buyers from around Hawke's Bay with some interest from Feilding, Tikitiki, Taupo and Gisborne.

In the sheep pens a small offering of run-with ram ewes were hard to sell with one pen passed in.

However, store lambs remained strong with ewes up $5 to $8 on last week. Some parts of Central and Southern Hawke's Bay had good rain last week which encouraged buyers to bid, agents said.

Prime sale

A good-quality yarding of 127 head of cattle sold well but ewes were hard work at Monday's prime sale.

Lambs also eased but not as noticeably as the ewes.

Agents blamed a lack of buyer competition for the slip in prices.
