MP Matt Doocey ‘pretty disappointed’ after rock thrown through car window

A Canterbury MP says it’s “quite concerning” that a rock was thrown through the rear window of his car.

Waimakariri MP Matt Doocey said that he had never had this happen before.

“Pretty disappointed that someone has thrown a rock through the back windscreen of my car,” Doocey said in a post to Facebook this morning.

“As the local MP for 11 years now I’ve worked hard to be accessible, respectful of other people’s views.

“The damage has been reported to the police, pointing out the CCTV camera nearby.

Speaking with reporters in Wellington this morning, Doocey said he was notified of the incident after a passerby saw the smashed Toyota Estima.

“I’ve never had anything like that,” Doocey said.

“I find it quite disappointing in an area like Waimakariri.

“It’s my branded car - I’ve had it for a while and people always see it at events; I drive it around.

“I’ve actually just led a community-led CCTV campaign in the district for issues - so hopefully it might come up on there.”

Doocey was first elected as the National MP for Waimakariri in the 2014 general election and was re-elected in 2020 and in 2023.

He is now Minister for Mental Health and Associate Minister of Health.

It comes after a window of Foreign Minister Winston Peters’ Auckland home was smashed in an alleged attack earlier this month.

A 29-year-old man has been charged with burglary and has appeared in court in relation to the incident.

Police were called on the evening of October 6 after a front window of Peters’ home he shares with partner Jan Trotman was smashed and a note was left on the door.

Before the damage, pro-Palestinian protesters had targeted the residence, gathering in front of the home chanting and writing slogans on the footpath.
