DairyNZ announced this week that it has chosen 15 dairy farmers as New Zealand's Climate Change Ambassadors.

Senior climate change advisor for DairyNZ, Kara Lok spoke to The Country Early Edition's Rowena Duncum about the Ambassadors and the dairy sector's plan to create a culture of climate conscious agribusiness amongst farmers and the broader dairy industry.

The Ambassadors are part of the Dairy Action for Climate Change which DairyNZ launched last year with Fonterra. The Ministry for Agriculture and MPI also support the move says Lok.

The Ambassadors are not climate change experts but farmers who are interested and focussed on environmental issues, and ready to teach other farmers.

"What we do know with farmers and issues like climate change is that they actually learn best from other farmers," says Lok who hopes this will be well received by the rural community.

The farmers are already involved in a range of initiatives including water quality and reviewing farm systems to reduce environmental footprints.
