Hawke’s Bay-based boutique dairy producer Origin Earth now has new owners in Bruce and Kathy Wattie.

An iconic Hawke’s Bay family continue a local food legacy, as Bruce and Kathy Wattie take over artisan dairy company Origin Earth. Kem Ormond finds out more.

Hawke’s Bay-based boutique dairy producer Origin Earth has found a new home and new owners in Bruce and Kathy Wattie.

The Wattie surname is synonymous with Hawke’s Bay and fits comfortably among the food produced there, as Bruce is the grandson of the late Sir James Wattie, who founded food processing company Wattie’s in 1934.

Origin Earth was started 15 years ago by Joanie and Richard Williams.

“We are thrilled that Joanie and Richard are still making the cheese for us,” Bruce said.

“We will continue to produce our milk, cheeses and yoghurts using Single Farm Origin Milk, which is supplied from a single CHB dairy farm.

“We will also be maintaining the commitment to excellence that has always defined the business.”

The Watties are passionate lovers of cheese; every Sunday night is cheese night in their home, and it has been since they can remember.

They said they never stop tasting, comparing and enjoying cheese.

While Origin Earth milk and cheese is available at the Hawke’s Bay Farmers Market in Hastings, the business is now based in new premises, at 293 Te Mata Rd, Havelock North.

The couple say they feel incredibly lucky to take on a business that already means so much to the community.

“Our focus is simple, to honour what’s been built, support the people behind the products, and continue making the dairy that Hawke’s Bay knows and loves.

“In time, we look forward to sharing a few exciting updates as this next chapter unfolds.”
