Jackson Rogers' catches are increasing in frequency and size.

Jackson Rogers' catches are increasing in frequency and size.

At least a couple of 90 Mile Beach Surfcasting Club members don't bother telling stories about the one that got away these days.

Gareth McKenzie, who makes the trip north from Kohukohu every club day, made it on to the prize list last weekend with a snapper that had clearly suffered some sort of misadventure early in life. Its deformed jaw gave it a serious overbite, although its size and condition suggested that it had not had too much trouble feeding.

Meanwhile 5-year-old Jackson Rogers might not be catching quite as many fish as his father Craig, but he's made a very impressive start to his career as a recreational angler.

He landed another snapper, his heaviest so far as 5.61kg, not big enough to make the top 10 prize list but more than enough to prove his father wrong when he warned, as his protege reeled it in, that it wasn't going to particularly sizeable.
