About 24 firefighters are on the scene of a large hay fire in Winslow, near Ashburton.

Fire and Emergency spokesperson Mau [Mow] Barbara says eight fire engines are in attendance - as flames continue to spread.

Emergency services were called to the blaze at 6.23am this morning.

He said up to six haystacks are now on fire and more than eight thousand bales.

He said no structures are currently under threat, and the fire is not deemed suspicious.

"We have a large haybarn on fire and three large haystacks. We have firefighters protecting exposures at this stage."

A house was under threat earlier this morning but is now not, he said.
