Clinton's Lions Club Winter feed competition raises $90,000

Mike Symonds, of Waipahi, won the heaviest individual fodder beet section of the Clinton Lions Club's winter feed competition.

More than $90,000 was raised from the Clinton Lions Club's winter feed competition last month.

Competition convener Phil Neame said he was delighted with the outcome of the competition, especially as the figure raised was up on previous years.

More than 200 entries had been received for the competition.

An awards evening and auction of donated prizes and sponsorship was held in Clinton on June 29.

''It attracted about 150 people,'' Mr Neame said.

The money raised would be divided between the Otago Rescue Helicopter Trust and the Bone Marrow Cancer Trust's Ranui House, Christchurch.

Ranui House provides self-contained accommodation for patients receiving treatment at Christchurch Hospital and their families.

The trust is building a 42-apartment complex to cope with demand for their facilities.

''We also had Ranui House's chief executive Allison Nicol [speak] at the dinner,'' Mr Neame said.

He wanted to thank the sponsors, local contractors and farmers who had contributed to making the auction so successful.

''The local sponsors, contractors and farmers come back year after year.

''It's locals supporting locals.''
