Donators and buyers of livestock show their support for the PGG Wrightson/ANZ Annual Daffodil Day Sheep Drive. This year's Cancer Society fundraiser, the 26th, is held on Daffodil Day, August 30, at the Matawhero Saleyards.

The farming community of Poverty Bay have been loyal and long-serving supporters of the Cancer Society’s stock sale fundraiser.

This year will be the 26th edition of the PGG Wrightson-ANZ Annual Daffodil Day Sheep Drive to be held at Matawhero Salesyards on Daffodil Day, August 30.

Farmers donate stock to the stockyard sale each year with some donors having supported the event for all 25 previous sales.

Purchasers can be generous and often pay more than market value for the stock as their way of supporting the event.

Some purchasers are from out of the region.

“Donators, auctioneers and transport companies really come together and contribute to the success seen year-on-year,” ANZ relationship associate Michelle Hawea said.

“The rural community we have here is unreal. They are generous and humble beyond words.”

Cancer Society fundraising and events co-ordinator Shay Podjursky said transport firms Heikells Transport, Robb Brothers and Harvest Matawhero Transport support the event by carting donations to saleyards without charge, while their office staff are “amazing”.
