Who the heck is Nathan Penny?

ASB's rural economist Nathan Penny is a regular on The Country and the recipient of many nicknames from host Jamie Mackay due to Penny's sunny disposition regarding payout prices.

We asked him a few questions to find out what really makes him tick and more importantly - to find out which nickname is his favourite.

What do you do?

I'm a rural economist with ASB Bank

Where do you do it?

In Auckland, but I like to get around the traps as often as I can.

What's the best part of rural life?

As above, I really enjoy getting around the country and meeting rural folk. I love how they freely discuss their farming businesses and how they happily do that over a beer.

What's the worst part of rural life?

Sometimes our farmers are modest to a fault. I'd love them to back themselves (and the great products they produce) more!

What are your hopes, dreams and aspirations for the future of New Zealand agriculture?

My dream is for NZ artisan produce to become as synonymous for excellence as the All Blacks, Swiss watches, French wine, Japanese knives (and swords) or Apple technology.

Big Saver or Big spender?

Promise you won't tell, but my wife loves a big spend up. I go along for the ride.

How do you like to relax?

Watching some live sport with mates and a beer.

Early bird or night owl?

Night owl

If you could only watch one sport - which would it be and why?

That's a toughie, but nothing beats football, especially come World Cup time.

Which nickname – The Oracle or Pollyanna?

I like both, but secretly I'm stoked when someone introduces me as 'The Oracle'
