It's a big week for Fonterra's community programmes with both the co-op's Milk for Schools and KickStart Breakfast in the spotlight.

Perhaps most importantly Rangikura School in Porirua got a surprise visit from Richie McCaw.

Fonterra's Chief Operating Officer for Global Operations, Robert Spurway told The Country Early Edition's Rowena Duncum that he bumped into McCaw at the airport, as the rugby legend was preparing to leave for Rangikura.

"He went there to surprise Tane Barbour who is from Rangikura School. He's blind and has a teacher aide named Blanche ... and she helps him learn braille. So Richie surprised both Blanche and Tane on Tuesday, and that's a small way we can recognise amazing Kiwis right across our communities."

Spurway reveals McCaw's next visit will be to Mossburn School in Southland but refuses to give away the "good sort," McCaw will be surprising.

Also in today's interview: Spurway talks about a milestone for KickStart Breakfast – a partnership between Fonterra, Sanitarium and the Ministry of Social Development to provide milk and Weet-Bix to schools throughout the country, and the Regional Dairy Industry Awards.
