Fire fighters are battling a large blaze at shoe repair shop in central Auckland.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman Jarron Phillips said the two-storey 10x15m building was "well alight" when the first crew arrived at the scene on Symonds St, near Newton Rd.

Emergency services were called about 11pm and nine fire crews are now there.

Part of the road is closed and police are putting up cordons.

No one was believed to be inside the building and there hadn't been any reports of injuries, Phillips said.

It's unclear how the fire started.
