The Sun may shine once winter falls as Game of Thrones author George RR Martin hints at a bittersweet ending for his famed book series.
Speaking at his former university, Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism, Martin told students that when it comes to the end of his series they "need to have some hope."
"We all yearn for happy endings in a sense. Myself, I'm attractive to the bittersweet ending," Martin said.
The 67-year-old author has been writing the Thrones' Song of Fire and Ice series for almost 25 years and wants his masterpiece to end similar to that of J.R.R. Tolkein's Lord of The Rings trilogy.
At the end of Tolkein's final book in the series, Return of the King, Frodo Baggins and his fellow Hobbits, after having destroyed the One Ring, return to their home only to find it ransacked by war.
"I think Tolkien did this brilliantly," he said.
With heroes having their heads smashed in like melons, white walkers on the loose and the ominous endless winter forever coming, bittersweet might be the best fans could possibly hope for.
