An Australian man is suing the State Government for failing to protect him from a convicted New Zealand paedophile who taught at his school in the 1960s.
The man claims he was sexually abused weekly by his art teacher, William Alexander Baine, between 1963 and 1966.
Baine was convicted in New Zealand in 2003 of seven charges of indecent assault on boys aged 12 to 16 while teaching in Christchurch and Wellington from 1954 to 1969.
Aged 75 at the time of conviction, Baine was jailed for three years.
The Australian man claims his school, Lyndale High School, was negligent in its duty of care to protect him and failed to carry out adequate checks on Baine's background, the Herald Sun reported.
He also alleges the school failed to investigate suspicious behaviour, including covering windows and door panels with paper, while Baine was teaching.
The man filed a writ with the County Court in Melbourne this month which said he suffered post-traumatic stress, depression, panic attacks and loss of intimacy in relationships.
He also said he now could not work because of the abuse.
New Zealand police reportedly believe Baine molested more than 100 boys after they found a thesis he wrote about his exploits.
Baine taught at two Melbourne schools in the 1960s and 1980s.
