People started barking in court today after a man arrested for allegedly punching a police officer three times in Cheviot yesterday during a routine traffic stop was denied bail.
Adam Travis, a 40-year-old of Aranui in Christchurch, appeared at Christchurch District Court this afternoon on a charge of assault with intent to injure.
The alleged offending occurred yesterday after two police officers stopped three vehicles, with nine occupants inside, on State Highway 1, in the small town of Cheviot.
It is alleged that two police officers were assaulted, one receiving minor facial injuries.
Police opposed bail for Travis when he appeared today.
Judge Stephen O'Driscoll refused a bail application and remanded Travis in custody until April 11.
A crowd in the public gallery of the courtroom made barking noises as he was led back into custody.
Two others were arrested and are due back in court at a later date.
