What councillors saidAs news of the scandal broke yesterday afternoon the Herald contacted councillors to see what they had to say. Many had not been informed yet. As the afternoon progressed the mayoral office phoned councillors to inform them of the breaking story.
Penny Webster: "I wouldn't want to make any comment. I'd find that quite distasteful so I'd rather not."
Wayne Walker: "I really don't want to make any comment. As far as I'm concerned, that's a private matter."
John Watson: "I've got no comment to make. It's none of my business, really."
Chris Darby: "I don't have any knowledge of it and that is dangerous territory. I have nothing to say."
George Wood: (Had been contacted by the deputy mayor.) "Hopefully there'll be some explanation in relation to the matter overall, that's what the council is really wanting ... It's murky as to what role people are playing at this stage."
Penny Hulse: (Said she had things to deal with and had not been in contact with Mr Brown.) "I have a city to run."
Mike Lee: "No comment." Do you think he should step down? "I'd rather not comment at all, thank you."
Noelene Raffills: "This is something for him and his family to sort out. I don't have comments to make on anyone else's life like this."
Christine Fletcher:
"I don't have anything to say at this stage ... but my advice for Len would be to get the facts out there because speculation is far worse than the truth."
Denise Krum: "I honestly wouldn't want to comment because it's an allegation, it's just something I've read on the website. It's too early for me to comment about what should happen in the future."
Arthur Anae: "That surprises me. I have never known or suspected that. I really can't see how he would find the time for that. I don't know, it doesn't make any logical sense to me at all. There's no way that could be true."
Calum Penrose: "I think he's got to see his way through it ... I'm just waiting to hear the outcome."
Dick Quax: "I have no comment to make at this point."
Sharon Stewart, Cameron Brewer, John Walker, Bill Cashmore and Linda Cooper could not be reached for comment.
