A group of motorists trapped in their cars for more than 12 hours have been freed after diggers managed to shift snow-drifts.
Their vehicles had become stranded on the motorway between Kinross and Kincardine in the east of Scotland last night.
One of the rescued drivers said: "It was incredible. All of a sudden the wind whipped up the snow and we could not go anywhere. There were 3ft snow-drifts up against the cars."
Across Scotland, Northern Ireland and parts of England yesterday people were trapped in cars, trains and their homes by blizzards. Winds of 70mph caused drifts of up to 8ft.
